Niche Startups You Might Miss
When you fire up your computer in the morning if you are like a lot of people, you eventually make it around to your feeds. If you are also like a lot of people, you have a boat load of feeds to scroll through, share on a link blog possibly, and read some of the articles from the last time you opened up your feed reader. This morning I found two niche startups that you may not even come across, but are still interesting nevertheless.
wowOwow – The Woman On The Web is a new site that is targeting a forgotten demographic – females over 40. The lay out of the site is clean and contemporary and basically flat out impressed me. I found this site via an LA Times article about a 55 year old former 6 figure salary person now doing an internship at this site.
This accomplished magazine editor lost her six-figure job at TV Guide last spring and is now, at 55, an unpaid intern at wowOwow.com, a fledgling website with columns and stories that target accomplished women older than 40.
If you think that I could be mistaken about the demographic or the site, just go to the site and scroll down the page. Most of their articles have quite a high rate of comments or interaction with their readers. Articles such as this one here about Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama seem to have raised a nice bit of reader-web site interaction.
SpiceWorks – A company out of Austin, TX that addresses one of the bigger issues facing the corporate IT world. When I use to work in that world, there was plenty of time wasted every day searching for answers to issues at hand. This company has put together a nice social network like atmosphere that is one big IT library of knowledge for users (IT workers!) to utilize.
“Spiceworks is invaluable for us,” said Brian Rousseau, information technology manager for Nobis Engineering Inc., an environmental engineering and consulting company in Lowell, Mass. “Before Spiceworks, I’d have an I.T. problem I couldn’t solve and would spend hours on Google trying to find the answer, but then I’d waste so much time searching through result pages. But with Spiceworks, it’s like walking into an I.T. library.”
The nice thing is that this company sought out sponsorship from some of the biggest names in the computer industry, and in the lower left corner of their Spiceworks software as seen in this picture – you see an advertisement.
Last year the company attracted 72 advertisers, up from 24 in 2007. Advertisers have included Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and Sony. During the same period, the company’s user base more than doubled.
While startups are scrapping by in many corners of the world, here are two niche startups doing their own thing and reaching a market that probably isn’t addressed by many.
