Rumor: Google To Purchase VoIP Solution Gizmo5

[Editor’s Note and Update: We got a response from Google on our story inquiry, though no confirmations or denials: “We’re always talking to various companies about various things, but we don’t comment on rumor or speculation.” –mrh]

googlegizmo5Rumors have begun circulating today that Google is about to announce the purchase of Gizmo5, but considering the source of the rumor, we’ll have to wait and see how true it is.

Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch is reporting exclusively that Google is about to close a purchase for Gizmo5, a VoIP provider, for $30 million.  If true, it seems that Google is on a buying frenzy considering it just closed a deal to acquire AdMob for $750 million in stock.

The rumor goes that Skype was looking to purchase the company so that the portion of the Skype technology the original founders were suing over could be replaced.  Now that the lawsuit has been settled, Skype has no need for the smaller company.  This is where Google is said to have entered the fray.

Google would be able to integrate Gizmo5’s technology into both Google Talk, which currently has no way to make or receive calls involving real phones, and with Google Voice, which would allow users to make and receive those calls from their computers.  In short, this purchase would make a lot of sense for Google, especially with the rumors that Google Voice is about to go international.

The problem is that it is TechCrunch reporting this "exclusively".  This translates into English as, "It may be true, or we might just be trying to stir the pot as our site isn’t getting enough attention today."  In this particular case, the acquisition does sound like a good idea, as even fellow ANGLEr Mark ‘Rizzn’ Hopkins said to me in an IM chat just a bit ago, "It’s a smart acquisition, and it’ll fit very snugly with the existing Google Voice services."

While everyone is all excited about what this rumor could mean for Google Talk and Voice, as I have my eyes firmly set on the mobile market, I wonder what this could mean for Android phones.  Google does love the idea of an open market, could we see them trying to sneak VoIP on to the Android-powered phones?

Only time will tell on all fronts from this rumor being true to exactly what Google may do with the service.
