Google TV Hype Grows on Eve of Logitech Launch
Google TV made huge waves when it was first announced in mid-May this year. This project has now matured and Google TV partners will be releasing their products this month. First in the race is Logitech, which will unveil their Google TV product this week during a press event. However, other contenders are not far behind as Sony will release its Google TV product later this month. The Sony Internet TV was showcased earlier at the IFA in Berlin.
As the holiday season approaches and Apple dominates the mobile device scene, Google is hoping its partnerships with device makers and content providers will usher a new era for entertainment. As high as the expectations were around Google’s early partnership with Sony, it appears Logitech may come out the real winner with Google TV’s upcoming opportunities. The Wall Street Journal reports:
When Google in the spring announced its initiative to bring a Web-based navigation scheme to TVs, most attention focused on partner Sony and its plans to offer new sets with Google TV built in. But many people have already purchased an HDTV, and aren’t eager to buy a new one just to experience Google’s TV software. That’s where Logitech comes in, singled out as the initial provider of so-called “buddy boxes” that will allow owners of existing TVs to surf the Web using Google TV. The company has scheduled a press conference for this Wednesday in San Francisco to formally unveil those products. Sony is expected to release its Google-enabled TVs later in the month.
The web-meets-TV product range is a new but fast-growing one. Last month, we witnessed Apple unveiling Apple TV at a press conference in SanFransisco. News about web-based TV is welcomed by consumers as well as by developers.
The Logitech press event might also bring news of a home-based web-conferencing product by Logitech. This arena is, again, not free of competition. Cisco have planned a product TelePresence for domestic users. They already provide Web-conferencing solutions for businesses, launching its line this week as well. Both companies have their own set of experience to help them win a bigger market share. Logitech has supplied Webcams to most of the consumer market. The company’s experience with hardware is sure to guide them through this endeavor. On the other hand, Cisco have successfully deployed web-conferencing solutions for businesses for a long time.
Best of luck to all the companies with the launches. Silicon Angle would bring on all the details about the products as and when the news is released.
