Android Gives Smart Phone Manufacturers a Huge Boost in Q2 2010

It looks like everyone who jumped on board the Android ship found themselves sailing fair waters in Q2. HTC Corp., Samsung, and Motorola have all shown growth and market promise arising out of embracing the Google product. This early decision has placed them among the top 10 brands second quarter, and it’s something Microsoft will need to face upon its Windows Phone 7 launch.  According to research released by iSuppli Corp,

Droid phone specialist HTC Corp. achieved industry-leading growth, with its smart phone shipments rising by a stunning 63.1 percent in the second quarter compared to the first. Meanwhile, on the strength of its Android-based Galaxy line of smart phones, Samsung Electronics posted the second strongest performance, with a 55.6 percent sequential rise. New Android licensee Sony Ericsson came in fourth in terms of growth, with shipments rising by 15.4 percent. Finally, Droid-focused Motorola Inc. ranked fifth, with an increase of 12.5 percent.

“Every brand that has put effort into designing smart phones using Google’s mobile operating system is riding the Android wave,” said Tina Teng, senior analyst for wireless communications at iSuppli. “From the spectacular growth of HTC and Samsung, to the steady advances of Motorola, Android is the secret sauce for smart phone growth for many companies in 2010.”

Android has been much beloved by the consumers for its huge range of diversity—facing rivals mostly only from Apple’s iPhone and now the Windows 7 phone. The Android platform allows for such powerful, interoperable platform between differing products that it can sell well across different communities. What probably also hasn’t hurt is the dazzlingly explosive boom of advertising for products such as Motorola’s Droid phone.

Whatever the case of the popularity, one thing is certain: people do like this platform and it showed in the second quarter.

Looking at the data, HTC made the biggest rise out of all with an impressive presentation at market. According to the data, they made it right into 4th place in the market and don’t show any signs of being shaken—their share of smart phone shipments ending at 8 percent of the market.

Right behind them in 5th place with 4.6 percent of the market is Samsung with their Anrdoid-based Galaxy S line of smart phones. Although, as if to juxtapose the market, Samsung’s bada platform didn’t appear to do so well.

Droid put Motorola in at 6th place, which isn’t as bad as it sounds when looking at the data as Motorola’s adherence to Android platform and design has given them five consecutive quarters of market growth. Looking forward, it doesn’t appear that this dominance will be slowing down or stopping anytime soon.
