Silicon Nanopores for Better Lithium Battery Capacity

A research team of  Rice University and Lockheed Martin fellows have discovered an amazing way of increasing the capacity of Lithium Ion batteries.  According to this research, silicon nanopores are extremely useful to increase the capacity of these batteries by 10 times!  This research has some important implications for mobile tech.  It’s a step in the right direction for green tech, too.  From Inhabitat:

“We are very excited about the potential of this work,” Sinsabaugh said. “This material has the potential to significantly increase the performance of lithium-ion batteries, which are used in a wide range of commercial, military and aerospace applications.” Steven Sinsabaugh is a Lockheed Martin Fellow.

This research is not exceptional as a similar study was done by MIT researchers a few months back in which they used carbon nanotubes as one of the battery electrodes. As a result, it generated about 10 times of power as compared to normal Li-ion batteries. But it is comparatively easier to create silicon nanopores and last longer too. The mass practical use of silicon containing Li-ion batteries is still far away, but the research team believes their invention to be used in almost every electrical device.
