Facebook Updates Android Apps, Disses iPad as Non-Mobile

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg denied the rumors that predicted the release of a phone at the press event today. Instead, Facebook announced major improvements regarding updates for iPhone and Android apps. the updates are already available via Android Market and iPhone App Store.

The platform changes will diminish the discrepancy between iPhone and Android regarding their liability to Facebook features. Facebook Places and Facebook Groups are to be available for the iPhone users.

On the other side, the development of Android apps for Facebook will know a rapid pace because Google has recently acquired the company that was in charge for Facebook to update the Android applications. Even Mark Zuckerberg admits: “The Android app has traditionally been a little bit behind”.

Now is the time for Facebook to increase efforts around Android, especially as the mobile platform continues to gain relevance in the mobile marketplace.  If Facebook’s serious about becoming the mechanism for social mobile exchange, it will have to ramp up its tools and developer resources around Android’s OS.

For mobile in general, Mark Zuckerberg also stated that the iPad “isn’t mobile” at all.  This was in response to a question regarding any iPad announcements from the event today, with Zuckerberg later clarifying that the iPad isn’t mobile in the same sense and mobile smartphones are.  This indicates that any upcoming design for tablets in general will be a dedicated effort, which is a sentiment we’ve sen reitrated from other developers looking to expand their presence to as many devices as possible.

Note to Zuckerberg, computer “iPad” tablets are becoming quite mobile.
