Times’ Digital Rebrand Suffers Early Loss as Director Steps Down

Just after the relaunch of News Corp titles as paid digital products, Times Newspaper digital director  Garter Sandhu decided to leave the company. According to sources, although presently on garden leave, he will be joining a new company in February 2011.

It can be recalled that Sandhu was brought from News Corp’s Star TV channel in India, where he was SVP of new media and information technology, in January 2010 to manage the project.

This might mean a negative thing to The Times, as it is currently undergoing a digital rebrand, and will need to focus on digital distribution for future monetization

Being the first general newspaper to move to an online subscription model and the iPad edition, The Times might need to rise to high critical acclaim on the same day as the iPad in the UK, remains the number one paid-for newspaper app.  Just a month ago, it was reported that Times invested much on digital restructuring which have been expected to be an indication of the online news investments for The Times had been opened
The Times digital team, working with Gurtej is successfully changing the publishing industry’s position within the digital space.

Gurtej is a veteran of News Corp who has worked on and off for the company for the last 14 years. Prior to rejoining News International in January this year, Gurtej was the General Manager / SVP of Digital at Star TV (News Corps Asia TV operations) responsible for Product Strategy, Business Development, Sales, Marketing, Design, Editorial and Technology.

Print media in general is undergoing some upheaval, with high hopes being pinned on the promise of digital distribution.  The Tribune and Conde Nast are just two others in the industry currently making major changes at an executive level, while AOL is keen on bringing in top players to manage their digital content projects.
