Twitter and YouTube 2010 Trends

Today, both the micro-blogging and video network giants released their top 10 trends for 2010, and the one kicking off this coverage is Twitter. After 25 billion tweets submitted this year by users, Twitter has released its fairly predictable if not somewhat obvious ‘top 10’ trends list.

“Top 10 Twitter Trends of 2010

1. Gulf Oil Spill

2. FIFA World Cup

3. Inception

4. Haiti Earthquake

5. Vuvuzela

6. Apple iPad

7. Google Android

8. Justin Bieber

9. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

10. Pulpo Paul”

This list, as Twitter articulately noted, reflects what’s happening in our little digital world, and if that translates into hundreds of millions of Vuvuzela-related user activities, so be it.

YouTube, of course, is not out of the loop, while Twitter published one blog post covering one top 10 list, YouTube started an entire blog dedicated to its trends, appropriately titled “YouTube Trends”. Along with an entertaining intro clip, the blog covers the biggest trends and most popular videos, from the ‘Driscoll Middle School Trick Play’ video to the Karate Kid trailer.

“Trends will also have billboard-style charts, cool data visualizations, and features highlighting what the YouTube ecosystem can tell us about major events as they unfold. As the project evolves, it will act as a laboratory for our engineers and staff to test out new ways of uncovering, displaying, and providing context for important or interesting video trends.”
