Michael Dell Talks Austerity, Inflation and 3Par

Michael Dell has some commentary on the cloud industry and market, as well as the 3Par bidding war, which was won by Hewlett-Packard. Dell told the Wall Street Journal that the era of austerity could benefit his company, since the obvious answer to the need of increased and efficiency is technology.

“Mr. Dell reckons it will prod governments, corporations and other institutions to look for ways to boost productivity, and technology is the obvious answer.”

Dell noted that while governments may have their internal austerity programs, they still buy tools. Moreover, Dell also noted he isn’t nervous about inflation because “we’re creating deflation for our customers in terms of productivity”, and his take on these two topics provides some optimism for 2011. Dell had a rough year in 2010 and it also been affected by EMC’s acquisition of Isilon for $2.25 billion, but the company looking to regain a stronger hold of the market.

Looking at the bigger picture, Michael Dell also gave his opinion on the 3Par bidding war HP won when it spent $2.35 billion on the acquisition. Dell noted HP paid “way too much” for 3Par, and compared the deal to his company’s $960 million acquisition of Compellent back in December.

SilioconANGLE was there to cover the 3Par bidding war, and covered Dell’s original announcement to acquire 3Par for $1.5 billion in cash, HP’s rivaling $1.6 billion bid and so on, until HP won the match.
