It turns out that even though Microsoft doesn’t have a set tablet strategy, Asus is going the way of Samsung with Android and is releasing quite an impressive Windows 7 tablet, and is letting the world know it.
After using it personally at the Microsoft Store, I can confirm the awesomesauce that this dude speaks of in a commercial touting Asus Eee’s Slate prowess as a serious tablet competitor.
While there is no doubt in my mind that the Slate deserves respect, it still boils down to the fact that applications built on Windows 7 will not be designed purposefully for touch, and will create a less than stellar experience. Also, price is going to be an a hindrance as well. A full computing experience as Microsoft and Asus tout above is going to cost you, to the tune of one thousand dollars.
All in all, it’s not a bad thing to be a tide over, and certainly there is a market for such things as Samsung has proven with their Galaxy Tab that was built on Android 2.2, rather than on tablet optimized Android 3.0. This Slate will see its success, even if it’s not worthy of popular Silicon Valley opinion.
