

According to Nielsen, Google’s Android OS tops in consumer use with 39% market share, followed by Apple with 28% then RIM BlackBerry down to 20%. But since Apple is the only company manufacturing smart phones with the iOS, they are still the top manufacturer of smart phones in the US.
Though Android tops the market, the 39% is shared by different mobile brands like HTC, Motorola, Samsung and others while Apple’s 28% is solely Apple devices, giving them the bragging rights of holding the top spot.
Other devices were not far behind, as they prove to be having as much luck with sales on the rise. HTC’s Android HTC phones represents 14% of the smartphone market, while its Windows Mobile/Phone 7 devices gathered 6%. Android Motorola smartphones made up 11% while 8% were using Samsung Android device. Samsung also sold about 2% of Windows Mobile and Windows Phone devices. But a report by ComScore earlier this month showed that Samsung is the top smartphone manufactures in the US with 24.8%.
Manufacturers may worry about who’s on top of the ladder, but consumers rarely do. What’s important for them is to have a device that’s easy to use and very reliable. As for Nielsen Holdings, they’ve succeeded in their long-term expansion of studying interactive consumer data beyond TV shows. The company reports that their revenues for the second quarter increased 10% to $1,396 million, or 5% on a constant currency basis compared to the second quarter of 2010. These increases were driven by a 14% increase within their Buy segment (7% on a constant currency basis) and a 4% increase within their Watch segment (1% on a constant currency basis). Revenues within the Expositions segment were flat year over year.
