Social Apps Get Licensing Agreements Too: the New Distribution of Software

Hip Digital Media, a social marketing firm, has entered into a licensing agreement with Appitalism operator Mobile Streams.  Appitalism is a marketplace similar to the App Store and Android marketplace that offers over 200,000 apps for both platforms, according to the company.  Hip Digital will now resell these applications in the U.S, Canada and U.S.

“We understand that retailing apps ourselves is just one of many ways to generate revenue for our content partners,” commented Simon Buckingham, CEO of Appitalism and Mobile Streams.  “By pursuing other distribution opportunities such as our partnership with Hip Digital, we provide developers with a wider scope for their apps and ultimately maximize their revenues.”

The Appitalism store has seen a lot of growth ever since it first emerged on the market, and managed to rack up an inventory that inches its way towards matching that of the two leading native app stores on the market.

Mobile Streams is not the only company that’s looking to generate the most revenue out of its app store. Apple is another example, but it took a very different approach recently to improve its monetization of the App Store. The consumer electronics and digital content giant recently implemented new polices that prevent publishers using its platform, such as Borders and Google Books, from providing in-app links to content they are selling outside the App Store.

Digital content publishing has drastically evolved throughout the past couple of years.  Apple TV just got a significant update that introduced users with more content and improved usability, while Logitech slashed the price of its Google TV set-top box now that the second version of the platform is on the way.
