Seagate Hybrid Drive is the Cloud’s Future

Hard drive maker Seagate announced it the one millionth unit of its Momentus XT solid state hybrid drive, which the company introduced back in spring 2010 for use in laptops and gaming systems.  The main reason the Momentus XT has seen so much success in such a short period of time is that, at its relatively low price, it boots up to 50 percent faster than its traditional 5400RPM counterparts.  Currently, ASUS, Dell, Sony and Toshiba as well several other manufactures offer computers powered by the 2.5-inch drive.

In a statement released today, Rocky Pimentel, Seagate executive vice president, chief sales and marketing officer, also shed some light on his company’s plans for the drive:

“We’re delighted that the Momentus XT drive has been enthusiastically received in the marketplace and look forward to introducing the next generation of the product, which will give consumers an even better, faster computing experience, before the year is out.”

Seagate is making efforts to sustain its current momentum in a number of ways. Yesterday it reached another milestone by releasing the GoFlex Turbo line-up. The 7200 RPM drives, which support the USB 3.0 standard that is 40 percent faster than USB 2.0 drives  running at 5400 RPM, come with the SafetyNet data recovery service included. Seagate says it’s the first hard drive manufacturer to include recovery services in an external hard drive offering.

Seagate is developing its offerings portfolio, and we’ve head a couple of more updates in thsji area recently. Over the weekend we’ve heard word of the upcoming Archos G9  Honeycomb tablet that will come equipped with a  250GB Seagate Momentus Thin.  The company also unveiled an Android version of its GoFlex Satellite wireless storage expander.
