Another Tablet Born into Dell’s Family

Dell has announced its plans for a second tablet, expanding its fledgling family shortly after releasing the first 7” tablet, named the Streak, in the U.S. last month. Dell has been among the first major players to launch an Android-powered tablet against Apple’s iPad, launched earlier this year.

Announced at the Oracle OpenWorld conference in San Francisco this week, CEO Michael Dell didn’t offer many details about the upcoming tablet. So there’s not much in the way of price or a release date, let alone specs on the technical details of the device itself. What he did, say, however, is that the 5” Streak will be available for purchase at Best Buy stores “soon,” indicating another gadget to make consumers gaga this holiday shopping season.

This furthers the development process around tablets and their resulting markets, encouraging some price wars by the end of the year. Android tablets in particular are facing high expectations, as the mobile operating system makes gains over Symbian and iOS. A little competition in the market won’t hurt either.

In other tablet news, RIM is making plans for a tablet as well. For continuous, live coverage of Oracle OpenWorld, tune in to SiliconANGLE.tv.
