EMC Beefs Ups Hadoop Support, Rolls out Big Data Appliances
EMC today expanded its data analytics portfolio by announcing two new Hadoop-based, big data analytics products that will help it grow its foothold in what is expanded to be a $200 billion market by 2015.
The first offering is the Greenplum Analytics Workbench. It’s basically a super-sized Hadoop testing system created by the (still freshly acquired) subsidiary, that’s built on over a thousand hardware nodes and packs 24 petabytes of memory. That adds up to about half of the entire written works of mankind.
Greenplum cofounder and now unit SVP Scott Yara said that Workbench will be free for developers that will use the platform to contribute to the Hadoop initiative.
The second new offering is the EMC Greenplum Modular Data Computing Appliance, or DCA. It’s powered by “a massively parallel implementation” of the PostgreSQL open-source database, and runs on two-socket Xeon 5600 servers.
“This is the first true mix and match of data warehousing and Hadoop in the industry,” claims Mike Maxey, director of product marketing at the Greenplum unit of EMC. “Teradata would probably argue with that, and maybe IBM, too.”
The DCA comes in several editions. The basic version with 36TB physical data warehousing space, and the High Performance version offers about two times the performance of the former. The Greenplum HD Enterprise Edition in turn throws some more advanced features such as an NFS interface , additional management functions and more.
Other recent Hadoop developments include news from Platfora, a new Hadoop startup that secured $5.7 million in a series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. In-Q-Tel, a government-run tech VC firm also contributed to the financing.
