OpenLogic Gets PaaS Savvy with CloudSwing

Open-source software developer OpenLogic announced a brand new offering today, called CloudSwing. The open-source PaaS takes a different approach than other products, and lets users customize and change the standard application stacks for the supported languages, as well as add new components – whether open-source or proprietary.

“CloudSwing offers developers pre-defined Platform as a Service stacks, but also allows users to change any stack component or create their own stacks that are not limited to pre-built or pre-selected components. CloudSwing will also support a wide set of operating systems, infrastructure and cloud choices.”

It seems that OpenLogic aimed to bring CloudSwing as close as it gets to being completely vendor-agnostic, a benefit that will make the PaaS solution attractive to both small scale developers and enterprise customers. OpenLogic also added a number of other features to CloudSwing, including security enhancements and web-based dev tool. There are two upcoming features as well: the  CloudSwing Management Portal and a spending management interface that will be rolled out later this quarter.

OpenLogic will offer three editions of its newly announced offering: the basic Trial Edition, currently in closed beta, the DevTest Edition and the full Production Edition.

The PaaS market is an increasingly crowded one, especially on the startup level.  The tremendous amount of demand this industry has seen translated into good results for some of the more popular players in this field, some of which have also begun to raise funding. The latest company to have done so is AppFrog, a PHP PaaS provider that changed its name Thursday after announcing an $8 million funding round.  The round was led by Ignition Partners (the venture capital firm that also led a $10 million funding round in Apprenda) with participation from  Madrona Venture Group, First Round Capital and Founders Co-Op, as well as Simon Crosby and Matt Ocko.
