VMware Revises Mobile Apps Amidst Virtualization Shift

VMware, EMC’s virtualization subsidiary, is taking virtualization to other fields, such as the mobile enterprise.  It unveiled the latest versions of its SlideRocket and Socialcast apps this week, making good on two firms it had acquired as a part of a broader strategy to build a cloud portfolio.

VMware cited some figures indicating the magnitude of the mobile worker trend among Fortune 500 companies; the majority of which probably use its hypervisor products.

“Enterprises are increasingly embracing the iPad and other mobile devices as crucial business tools. According to Apple’s latest earnings report, 86 percent of the Fortune 500 are deploying or testing iPads, up from 75 percent last quarter.”

The new SlideRocket Player for iPad now offers users sending a link, on top of the existing social media integration and other functions that put an emphasis on increasing viewer engagement.

Moving on, the new Socialcast Android and iOS apps come with enhancements to the on-the-go sharing features in the form of OAuth 2.0 secure login.  While a relatively minor update, EMC is increasing the security of all of its products, including its Mozy enterprise backup service.

But in the virtualization space, others are making gains too.  NetEx announced HyperIP Version 6.0.  The latest edition of its WAN optimization virtual appliance will ship with HyperIP for Hyper-V, which extends support beyond VMware ESX to Microsoft’s hypervisor as well.
