Juniper Networks’ Take on JavaOne, Mobile and More

Juniper Networks has been under some pressure lately, retooling its strategy in a shifting networking industry as rival Cisco faces similar challenges.  Despite recent layoffs and a shaky stock market, Juniper continues to press on.  Stopping by theCube to discuss the status of the company, its new products and its management is Eddie Amos, Juniper’s VP of Developer Marketing and Evangelism.  Sitting down with SiliconAngle founder John Furrier and Wikibon founder Dave Vellante at Oracle Openworld, Amos talks about Juniper’s latest involvement with JavaOne, which the company was promoting at the event this week.

The networking space is “very dyamic,” Amos says, discussing the industry needs around traffic demand and unstoppable growth.  “For JavaOne we’ve got some interesting things using Connect technology to do the Minority Report thing, moving screens around,” Amos says with a chuckle.

He goes on to talk about some of the other products Juniper’s pushing, particularly in the mobile space, which is a key area for the industry moving forward.  “We have Junos Pulse, which adds an extra layer of security,” Amos explains.  “For Junos, it’s our single OS across various devices.  We’ve exposed more of that functionality out, due to the SDK.  We’re going to expose the SDK as much as we can and we’ve been getting much more aggressive.  There’s network monitoring solutions, ways to manage various devices within the enterprise…we continue to enhance the product.”

The build out around its Junos SDK became a hot topic during the remainder of the interview, as Amos talks about the company goals in enabling enterprises at the developer level to build the right apps, regardless of their programing language.  “We want to give them opportunities for any and everything they need for the data center and exposing those APIs so they can build those great apps,” Amos says.  “We’re just an enabler of this technology.”

As Juniper meddles in a highly competitive space, Vellante then asks how the company is dealing with the industry shifts and consolidation.  “you’re always going to have competition,” Amos says.  “You to to most companies and it’s a heterogeneous environment.  Look at what we’re doing.  We’re manically focused to push the envelope, to push solutions and have the right interoperability.”

Vellante then digs into some customer questions, asking if it’s getting harder to justify for new clients to go with best of breed with a single solution, and if so, why Juniper?

“Customers want the best solution that addresses their need and we help them face the problems they deal with every day,” says Amos.

Hitting on some other pain points in the shifting industry, Amos goes on to talk about Juniper’s company ethos and how they’re weathering the current economic environment.  “Customers are still willing to pay for good value,” Amos says. “ I continue to be encouraged, especially in the developer world, with what we’re doing and what we bring to market.”

“[Juniper] is one of the most unique cultures I’ve ever worked in.  There’s mutual respect, they’re very innovative, and that all comes from the executive leadership.  It’s an incredible bunch of folks.  In terms of the buzz and feel, it’s pretty strong in what we can accomplish as a company, and where we’re headed.”
