Trips to the South Seas, Free Kindles and Other Impressive Perks Startups Offer To Get the Best Talent

Talk to anyone in tech and the biggest challenge these days is finding talent. The competition is forcing startups to find more creative ways to attract employees.

I saw a Reddit post that reflects on this trend. The question: “What are the coolest startup job perks that you’ve ever hear of?” Here are some of the more impressive ones that the community submitted.

Party on a tropical island

MindValley is a startup based in Malaysia. Most of its employees live in the United States. Once a year, the company flies its employees and their spouses to a tropical island such as Bali. Over the span of four days, the employees party, eat dinner on the beach and hear from experts,

How about a cow?

Amicus will give you $2,000. If you want they can donate a cow for you to heifer.org. If you want to play superhero they can give you an Iron Man Deluxe helmet. A free year’s supply of coffee and your favorite beer are perks, too.

Monitor wonderland

ZocDoc offers a free Kindle with a list of books that can be expensed such as those from Malcom Gladwell, Edward Tufte or Nassim Taleb. Developers get four monitors and 28 gigs of ram per desktop. Apparently the murals on the walls are awesome too.

Let’s go ride our bikes and take some pictures

iStockPhoto is a more established company but with a startup sensibility. Employees may check out camera equipment to go take pictures. Employees also receive $300 per year on health and wellness costs such as a gym membership or sporting equipment.

How about some soppressata?

Tasty Labs has a “charcuterie day” on Wednesdays though apparently someone renamed it to “so we meat again!”

Hookers and Blow

Other perks? How about tickets to Burning Man? Need your car detailed? And then there’s this one from a Nevada gaming software company.

So, if you are an engineer with mad Hadoop skills? Negotiate. The South Seas may be closer than you think.
