Citrix’s “Non Obvious” Mobile Predictions: iOS Kills Flash
Citrix’s Chris Fleck, VP of development for the virtualization solutions maker, posted a list of his own predictions for 2012 concerning the mobile space in particular. He noted some interesting highlights which might as well be very plausible extensions of the existing trends in this industry.
One of the main things Fleck is expecting is the adoption of newer ways to communicate with so-called “smart’ devices – voice commands for one, a trend that Siri will likely be spearheading thanks to its head start, and hand gestures.
iOS for the enterprise
iOS plays a big part in the Citrix mobile outlook for this year. And Citrix’s R&D head believes it will manage to accomplish what HP only began working on with webOS: turning the mobile OS into a platform, or at least get the end user to adopt it as one, even if in a very indirect way.
“iOS Kills Flash .. On the Desktop – In 2012 if your website relies on Flash you’re losing significant traffic and business. iOS and the iPad will become part of the standard testing matrix for compatibility just like testing for multiple browsers. The popularity of iOS and the population it represents will be too significant to ignore. This will in turn expedite the adoption of HTML5 as a Flash alternative.”
iOS will share this near term growth with Windows Phone 7, according to non obvious prediction #9. Citrix thinks that Google’s entrance into manufacturing with the Motorola acquisition will play in favor of Microsoft, and Android OEMs will start looking into their other options. Growing adoption of additional mobile platforms will be driven by the enterprise as well, thanks to an ever-expanding list of companies that are allowing their workers to use their own phones. Pocket-fitting tablets will also be playing a key role, according to Fleck.
