This Week in Cloud: Hosted Backup, Automation and Remote Private Clouds

This week had a few noticeable developments in the hosting arena as well as the private cloud.

The first piece of news in this week’s recap is SunGuard’s newest product – a cloud-based backup service that runs entirely on Amazon Web Services. In essence the offering integrates SunGuard’s encryption, data protection and other technologies with AWS’s storage and compute ‘bi-directionally.’  The company revealed plans to further flesh out this approach as the initial solution gains in popularity.

Another new service was launched by ScaleXtreme this week. The automation solutions provider decided to offers its largest clients a perk by introducing a cloud-based patcher  for both Windows and Linux boxes managed by its Xpress software. Scans for updates can be scheduled by admins to fall within maintenance period.

Cloud services have been all the rage this week, especially in the vendor scene. vCider rolled out the second version of its  Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), a very marketable name for a platform designed to handle enterprises’ hosted deployments. The main thing v2.0 addresses is security: customers can now be assured the data they’re processing and storing remotely is secure thanks to several native security tweaks, as well as the ability to install other software serving the same goal.

The last piece in this roundup is OpenLogic’s CloudSwing facelift. It seems that the company is looking for more ways to address the cloud and big data. Users can now leverage AWS and Rackspace load-balancing, in addition to the capacity to offload databases to Amazon and several other new features. One of these is application level monitoring, which fits rather well in the high-performance, scalable picture.
