Our desire to stay connected anytime and anywhere has fueled the growth of various markets within the mobile space, including mobile development. The fiery tug-o-war between Apple iOS and Android is a testament to the immense revenue at stake. Last week, Android revealed some impressive numbers for their Market, which recently surpassed 450,000 apps. But Apple will not be sidelined that easily as they reach a jaw-dropping 25 billion apps downloads overall.
Both giants will also face FTC probes on alleged data-stealing apps that riddle their respective marketplaces. Whether it’s controversy over their marketplaces or rising security demands, there is no doubt that interests continue to grow with mobile developers and their tools. Let’s take a look at some of the recent updates in this corner from the last few days.
Mobify
What seemed to be a paradox in the mobile sphere is now a reality. A web platform designed to optimize ecommerce and multi-channel strategies of marketers and developers, Mobify pushes their “one web” concept with the launch of a new tablet optimization product. This innovation aims to integrate mobile commerce through a single framework that syncs all devices – tablet, mobile, television and any new web-connected device. Marketers and developers will have full authority over their websites without having to go through third party proxy servers. They are also pouncing on the tablet economy, which rose to 19% of the mobile market last year.
Mobify CEO, Igor Faletski shares his vision on their new venture:
“By extending the Mobify Platform to tablets, we’re helping our customers tap into an extremely lucrative opportunity. Tablets have already had a profound impact on mobile commerce and we’re just in the early stages of this tablet economy. The Mobify platform has a proven 100-day ROI with smartphones and we’re confident we can extend the same to tablets.”
At present, Mobify powers more than 20,000 mobile websites globally.
appMobi
Arguably one of the most visible platforms in the market, appMobi has been regularly pioneering and launching innovations with the expansion of its portfolio. In December of 2011, they released a tool for audio and animation problems with a new HTML5 SDK. The following month, this proponent of the mobile web introduced a mobile optimized jQuery alternative, and greeted February with improved In-Game Analytics platform for iOS. Now at GDC 2012, announced the availability of directCanvas acceleration technology for the Android mobile operating system.
“Today appMobi is extending the proven game acceleration benefits of directCanvas beyond iOS to the Android platform,” says Sam Abadir, appMobi CTO. With over 300 million devices in the field, and adding 850,000 new devices every day, the Android smartphone platform dominates the Apple iOS platform in size, yet we have seen very few hit Android games. We intend to change that.”
Sencha
Sencha is also making mobile development a breeze, this time using Mac and Windows. Sencha Touch 2 will allow developers to code iOS apps using Windows PC and vise versa. It is the first framework of its kind and experts see the product capturing the hearts of many publishers. The refreshed API for Sencha Touch hopes to improve the development ecosystem by taking developer support and development experience in another level.
ARM
With technology that plays heavily into sophisticated digital products and design, ARM has just introduced a support system for graphics analysis readily available for mobile and game developers. The ARM Development Studio 5 (DS-5(TM) v5.9) toolchain allows integrated optimization across the entire system which includes applications processor and GPU. This tool is ARM’s answer to mounting requirements for high-performance graphics development.
A mobile dead end is at the farthest horizon, perhaps. Payments, shopping, software development, applications, advertising, social and more—all facets of mobility are following an upward trajectory and declining point is nowhere to be found at the moment.
