This Week in Cloud: VSPEX, HP and OpenStack
The past week had its fair share of cloud-related updates, with a few big developments that managed to get the blogosphere’s full attention– including ours.
The biggest highlight is probably the announcement of VSPEX, EMC’s new converged infrastructure cloud architecture. The offering is based on storage from the company and DataDirect, although it offers considerably more flexibility in other areas. Clients can choose from over a dozen different configurations spanning hypervisor and networking options.
SiliconANGLE.tv managed to produce a handsome number executive interviews and just as much commentary at the launch event.
Moving on, the other big development this week is from Hewlett-Packard. The company has been working on its own PaaS for several months now, but this week we finally got a launch date. The company’s own twist to the concept that AWS and others are already monetizing will become generally available in May, and several early adopters are already making use of the platform to run their apps.
Another PaaS update comes from SunGard, which rolled out a new service to make live patching somewhat easier for customers. The basic idea is that a request with the new code is sent by a client to a SunGard engineer, who then modifies it if needed prior to applying it. Managed Flow as it’s seems to add a bit of automation to this process, although its viability does seem to depend on actual response times.
Last but not least in this weekly roundup is SolidFire. The flash storage maker made itself a part of the OpenStack community by extending support to the cloud OS, and announcing that it will attend an upcoming gathering dedicated to it.
