Samsung to Unveil New Galaxy on May 3

Today’s mobile news roundup includes Samsung’s May 3 product launch, Apple’s failed ACCC settlement, an app for people with visual and hearing impairment, and more.

Come and meet the next Galaxy

That’s what the Samsung event invites had to say.  Pretty intriguing huh?  Well it is in the sense that they didn’t elaborate as to what they will be unveiling on the May 3 event in London’s Earl’s Court.

Some are speculating that either the Samsung Galaxy SIII or a new line of Galaxy devices will be unveiled.  The Galaxy SIII is expected to have a quad core processor, and a 4.6” screen for an “edgeless” design instead of making the whole device bigger.

A new line of quad core smartphones

Speaking of quad-core phones, Meizu Technology Co., Ltd.,  Chinese electronics manufacturer, introduced MX Quad-core smartphone the company’s new line of smartphone.

The MX Quad-core is powered by the Cortex-A9-based, 32nm HKMG (High-K Metal Gate) quad-core Samsung Exynos chip and features a 1,700mAh battery, 4-inch 960 x 640 ASV display and an 8-megapixel BSI camera.  It also features the Flyme OS, which is a customized version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.  It comes in two sizes, 32GB and 64GB, but there’s no news yet on whether it comes with a microSD slot.  The phone is priced somewhere between $400-$500.

Apple fails to settle 4G conundrum in Australia

When the new iPad launched Apple boasted of its 4G capabilities.  But unfortunately Apple failed to mention that it only works on North American 4G networks.  So the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) filed a case against Apple for their misleading ads regarding the 4G capabilities of the new iPad.

In a mediation session in court today, Apple failed to reach an agreement with the ACCC remedies regarding the misleading ads.  Apple last month agreed to refund unhappy customers and to display an advisory in stores and promotional material, but they did not agree with all of ACCC’s demands.

Popular BlackBerry app gets an upgrade

Karta Mobile Inc. announced the release of version 4.0 of Viira, its popular BlackBerry app for Getting Things Done – an app based on New York Times bestseller “Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity” written by David Allen and embraced by countless of entrepreneurs, executives and busy professionals worldwide.

The 4.0 version on Viira introduces an elegant user experience, deeper integration with users’ mobile devices, rich and comprehensive support for advanced aspects of Getting Things Done, and solidifies Viira’s position as the go-to application for GTD on the BlackBerry platform.

Morse code-based vibration app

Anmol Anand, a senior student of Masters of Computer Applications at Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi, used the Google App Inventor to create an app that would help people with visual and hearing impairment send and receive messages by converting them into Morse code vibrations.

The “PocketSMS Application” works on any Android smartphone, even the cheapest and least sophisticated of the bunch, and can be downloaded for free at the Bapsi.org, the website of the Bidirectional Access Promotion Society.

“Most of the assistive technologies address only one sort of disability,” said Arun Mehta, founder of Bapsi.org.  “We have voice recognition software for the blind and Braille keyboards, but nothing for those who might be both deaf and blind.”
