HP Killing Two Birds with One App Store

Hewlett-Packard may not have set any new trends recently, but it’s investing quite a bit in the transformation of its traditional business.  HP is doing it in the cloud, and the company’s latest launch seems to address not one but two different areas at the same time: mobile and big data.  The hardware giant is targeting the channel rather than end clients.

The first new solution is HP Enterprise Mobility, an internal app store that expands into other portions of an application’s lifecycle. It features categorized access with filtering based on role, location and other factors; usage tracking, and also provides a catalog workers can browse.

At the same time, the platform also features other less common elements for this type of offering, most notably an integrated testing interface that encompasses task-specific performance and cross-platform compatibility metrics.

The apps are only one half of the mobile enterprise equation–HP is also looking to get involved with the way companies connect their applications to their data.

The HP Mobility Gateway offers some pretty nifty features to facilitate exactly that, with the promise of offering a ‘data rich’ experience to employees using the internal app store.

HP Enterprise Mobility Gateway enables CSPs to help enterprise employees access the right enterprise data at the right time by connecting mobile applications with an enterprise’s back-end systems. Available on the customer premises and as a service from the CSP, the gateway enables developers to create data-rich apps that run effectively even when bandwidth is limited.

Gateway can be implemented to aggregate data from several different systems at the same access point, and allows for offline access using client-side caching and the ability to download data sets. This is all placed behind an authentication and role-based access layer, with the addition of reporting tools and analytics for admins.
