Sustainable Big Data

Initiatives like the Sustainia100 are timely in light of new technology platforms from leading businesses like SAP that harness Big Data to foster sustainability. Reviewing organizations across 56 countries, the Sustainia100 honors innovative and scalable solutions that foster sustainable societies. Sustainia has chosen Essess, a Big Data company dedicated to commercial and residential energy efficiency, as one of the Sustainia100 at Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

Essess’ profiles millions of buildings per month using multispectral imaging technology that captures, identifies and quanitifes energy loss. The innovative energy loss detection and diagnostics technology, developed at MIT’s Field Intelligence Laboratory, automatically detects and quantifies energy leaks for buildings. Essess captures thermal images of several million buildings per month in a drive-by format and analyzes the data with its proprietary software and scientific algorithms. Customers can review the data for their individual buildings through the Essess customer engagement platform (eCEP).

Essess CEO, Storm Duncan shares his enthusiasm for the Sustainia recognition: “Big Data is becoming a critical enabler for reducing global energy consumption. Essess provides the first viable and scalable technology which helps individual home owners as well as entire communities see the energy being wasted. Being named to the Sustania100 is both an honor and a validation of our business strategy and technological accomplishments.”

Sustainia is a global community of organizations and corporations aiming to promote sustainability through implementing cutting-edge technologies.  Participating organizations include the UN Global Compact, Cisco Systems, General Electric, Philips Lighting, and UBS Investment Bank. The Sustania100 awards committee includes Connie Hedegaard (European Union Commissioner for Climate Action) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (former governor and Founding Chair of the R20 Regions of Climate Action Group).

Of the promise of the Sustainia initiative, committee member Arnold Schwarzenegger states: “Sustainia100 is a clear demonstration of the benefits sustainable solutions hold. They can improve our lives now, if we get into the mode of action.”
