Pinterest, the popular social interest website, has been notably absent from Android phones up until now, but fans were hopeful that that was about to change following reports the online giant is set to make an appearance at Google’s I/O developer conference in San Francisco this week.
The rumor was first sparked by Ausdroid, an Australian blog which reported on Sunday that Pinterest had been listed as an Android-related exhibitor during the two-day exhibition. Ausdroid even managed to produce a screenshot, which clearly states that Pinterest is “now available for Android”, although so far, that simply isn’t the case.
Speculation has since been dampened however, with the website VentureBeat claiming that while Pinterest is naturally very interested in Android, it doesn’t plan on making any announcements just yet.
“In terms of anything being announced there, we’re excited about the Android platform and are working hard on building a great app,” Pinterest spokeswoman Erica Billups told VentureBeat. “However, we don’t have plans to announce anything at I/O.”
According to Billups, Pinterest’s appearance at the Google I/O exhibition is in order to take part in ‘demos’ at a planned developer “sandbox” at the event. For its part, Google’s refused to comment on the speculation either way.
Pinterest fans will likely be disappointed if the Android app is a no-go this week. For months now, the social media giant has been promising users that an application is under development, but as of yet the company is yet to offer a timeline for its launch.
A post on Pinterest’s official support pages does reassure fans that the app will eventually happen:
“We’re working on a dedicated Android app. We know lots of folks are eager to see one, so when we feel we’re in the final stages of its development, we’ll be sure to share more information.”
Until it happens though, Pinterest’s Android crowd are just going to have to make do with the mobile version of the site. User demands may be quenched with some of the unofficial Pinterest apps in the Google Play store, such as Photo Uploader for Pinterest, Gallery+ for Pinterest, Pinterfetch and Pin My Photo but these are unlikely to satisfy many, especially when the iOS version has been around for quite some time now.
The sooner the app comes the better for Android users, who are still no doubt miffed over a spate of fake Android apps, which are believed to have compromised user’s bookmarks, location and browser history earlier this year.
Whether or not Pinterest does make an announcement at the Google I/O, we’ll just have to wait and see. Stay Tuned!
