EnterpriseDB’s Cloud Database Gains over 2,300 Customers

EnterpriseDB debuted Postgres Plus Cloud Database just five months ago, with the premise of a more cost-efficient and easy to use PostgreSQL DB that can run on AWS and HP Cloud Services. The company hasn’t expanded the support roster as of yet, but did manage to build up a rather impressive customer base.

In less than six months the solution attracted over 2,300 users according to a release that went out this week, including Egraphs.

“Our team spent just a few hours getting up and running, leaving us with more time todevelop and fine-tune our core products,” William Chan, a software engineer at Egraphs, said. “EnterpriseDB’s Remote DBA team and the cloud database did the heavy lifting setting up replication and backups.”

Postgres Plus pricing starts at $0.11 an hour if you’re an Amazon Web Services customer, and is available for free on HP Cloud Services. The latter IaaS is still in beta and EnterpriseDB will undoubtedly attach a price tag to the DBaaS once it exists this stage.

Coupling big data with the cloud is an idea that  industry insiders toyed around with early last year, but it’s not a trend of its own driven by EnterpriseDB and other vendors. After all, it’s not the only company that identified a big opportunity in this area – Xeround is one of them too.

Xeround officially transited into a cloud database firm after a funding round in late 2011 and its solution is available on a relatively large number of IaaS platforms. It supports some of the smaller ones as well including the Joyent Cloud.

While it’s a notable expansion the relatively recent update feels like a rushed one: Joyent Cloud users can only deploy Xeround FREE, a very limited version of the software that is not meant for anything other than giving customers a small taste of the available features.
