Strange Big Data: Sex Intelligence

It’s true, humans are sexual creatures. If there’s one common bond that’s shared by all of humanity, it’s our instinctive urge to have sex. From the moment we hit puberty and our hormones start surging, we dedicate a huge portion of our time pursuing one mission only – to find sexual partners.

We think about sex all the time. Subconsciously or not, the moment we lay eyes on a member of the opposite sex we instantly make up our minds as to whether they’re desirable or not, before anything else. It’s natural and instinctive; indeed, it’s wired into our DNA. Of course, humans aren’t the only ones who have sex for pleasure – animals do too – but we’re the only ones that have the intelligence to talk about it, express our feelings, and devise methods of satisfaction even when we’re alone.

Humans are also the only ones who can come up with interesting infographics about sex, such as this one about Your Brain on Sex, which reiterates everything I’ve just mentioned. As the inforgraphic demonstrates, we can hardly be blamed for feeling the way we do. The brain is really just one big pleasure center, relentlessly driving us to pursue that most fundamental of goals – to have sex.

This same relentless drive is probably what compelled the designer of this infographic about What Women Want from men. The data was taken from the results of searches for men made by women on online dating sites. It must have been very time consuming, which only serves to underline just how important sex is, I suppose.

After all, before we can have sex we need to be able to hook up with a desirable partner, right? And so it is that we (boys and girls) have an insatiable thirst for information about members of the opposite sex – we want to know what makes them tick, and exactly what they’re looking for, so that we can present ourselves in the best possible light.

But knowing what women (or guys) want isn’t the only consideration. Or, it probably shouldn’t be. Finding a desirable partner is easy enough, but meeting someone that we’re compatible with – you know, sharing the same fantasies etc – isn’t so easy.

Or is it? As Sex: The Definitive Infographic illustrates, while our attitudes to sex vary quite a bit, we all share a certain level of depravity. The most surprising finding from this survey is that we’re probably not anywhere near as perverted as we think we are – for example, a somewhat incredible 68 percent of people think it’s perfectly acceptable to take a pee in the shower, and almost half of these (one in three people?!) admit to getting off to anime at least once in their lives.

So there you have it, it would seem that if you’re not a pervert, you’re actually quite strange.
