SalamWorld, A Social Network For Those Who Appreciate Islamic Values

Salam World social networkReligious types who are fed up with all the sleazy images posted onto Facebook will soon have an altogether more conservative platform to help them while away the hours – a new social network with a distinctly Islamic flavor.

SalamWorld, as the network is called, is set for its big launch in November with the promise of “better protection” for its users from offensive content. Using filters, the website is able to ensure that any material posted onto the site conforms with Islamic codes.

Erol Toksoy, the Indonesia-based networks brand manager, told the Jakarta Globe that the idea is to create a social network that’s based on “Islamic values” and can help users explore the full potential of the global Muslim community. Toksoy says that SalamWorld hopes to attract 300 million users in the next few years, as part of its ultimate goal of eliminating communication barriers among Muslims and helping the community change the world.

“The Muslim community has tremendous potential to change the world, for example, the way it did in Tunisia and Egypt. If we can connect them to each other, great things can be achieved. We want to create an Islamic brand that Muslims can be proud of,” said Toksoy.

The site, which is currently in beta phase with around 1,000 members testing it out, doesn’t intend to take on Facebook. Rather, Toksoy says that the idea is to supplement Facebook, focusing more on communities with shared interests instead of personal profiles.

“The platform can be used by users to share ideas and sell things, or just for those seeking friends in the community,” added Toksoy.

Non-Muslims are more than welcome to sign up for SalamWorld, which will initially be made available in eight languages, including English and Arabic. However, Toksoy asks that those who do sign up should be able to “appreciate Islamic values” and abide by the site’s rules.

On the face of it, it seems like a very smart move to tap into the world’s Muslim community. The site is expecting big things from its home country Indonesia especially – not only is it the most populous Muslim country in the world, it also has more than 42 million Facebook users.

Watch the following presentation video and you’ll see there’s plenty of reason to think the site will be a success:

As SalamWorld points out, there are an estimated 300 million Muslim internet users around the world, yet up until now no one has made a serious attempt to target this demographic with a dedicated social networking site.
