TheCube’s Dave Vellante was able to sit down with the startup showcase winner Hadapt at Strata-Hadoop World 2012 in New York. The discussion starts with Hadapt’s cofounder and CEO Justin Borgman and the VP of Marketing Scott Howser.
Justin Borgman explains that Hadapt was started with the desire to bring together the performance and functionality of an analytic database with the scalability of Hadoop. Since there is an established skill set around SQL and not Hadoop, they use SQL to interact with structured and unstructured data in one Hadoop based platform. One of Hadapt’s clients describes Hadoop as a supervised landfill where they can dump all their data. Once that data is out there, analytics can then be run on the data in place with Hadapt with no connectors to an outside analytics platform. Data does not have to be moved.
Scott Howser next outlines the announcements that Hadapt had for the conference. The first is the announcement of the interactivity with Hadoop through visualization media being developed. The second is the Hadapt Development Kit. This kit gives “the ability to publish, via SQL functions, the advanced analytic ecosystem of Hadoop.”
A partnering company with Hadapt is Tableau. Ted Wasserman, Product Manager with Tableau, states that their mission is to help users see and understand data no matter where it is located. Tableau is visualization software. One of the obstacles in working with Hadoop is the latency when it comes to querying information due to the large amount of data it holds. Wasserman expresses that they work with Hadapt to cut down that latency and can provide the data visualization quicker.
Howser finishes by explaining while the old ways of storing and analyzing data will exist for a while; there is a desire to change for enterprises. The goal is to get the power of the data in the hands of analysts faster, so that they can perform their functions with more efficiency.
