Samsung to add iPad mini in patent infringement complaint
Samsung was able to add the iPhone 5 in their patent infringement complaint against Apple. But now, the South Korean company wants to throw in the iPad mini for good measure. The reason behind Samsung’s addition to their complaint is the basis that if previous Apple devices infringed their technology, then future devices will also infringe them.
“Good cause exists to amend Samsung’s contentions because Apple’s new products were not yet available when Samsung submitted its original contentions on June 15, 2012 or its first Motion to supplement its infringement contentions on October 1, 2012,” Samsung said in its motion. “… The iPod Touch 5, iPad 4, and iPad Mini have the same accused functionality as the versions of the iPod Touch and iPad that are already part of this case. As such, the proof of infringement of the patents-in-suit by the iPod Touch 5, iPad 4, and iPad Mini will be substantially the same as for other Apple devices already accused of infringement in this litigation.”
Earlier this month, U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal agreed to let Samsung and Apple add new devices to their patent infringement complaint against one another. Apple added the Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note , Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note 10.1 and Google’s Android Jelly Bean. The judge declined the addition of Jelly Bean in their case against Samsung because it’s a Google-made product, and Samsung is not responsible for that technology. The hearing for the case is scheduled for 2014. By that time, who knows how many other new devices will have sparked up a fresh round of patent infringement lawsuits.
Apple shaves off prices for one-day sale
Earlier this week Apple released a teaser for their one-day sale, happening today. You can save $41 for a 16GB, $51 for a 32GB, and $61 for a 64GB iPad with Retina Display and Lightning connector. You can save more, $14-$591, if you buy an iPad 2, or $50-$80 for an iPad 3. iPods are also on sale, as well as Macs and other accessories, but iPhones aren’t. Aside from the great deal, Apple also offers free shipping and their signature gift wrapping if you purchase devices today. To check out how other shops are faring, try AppleInsider’s price guide.
AT&T offers refurbished iPhone 5 for $99
Though the iPhone 5 was released just a couple of months back, AT&T is already offering refurbished iPhone 5’s for only $99 with a two-year contract. The deal is only available for a 16GB iPhone 5, but you can also nab the 32GB for $199 and the $64GB for $299. Another catch is, the offer is not available in stores, only on their website. Plus, we’re still not sure if this is only a Black Friday deal. Still, for those those waiting to get their hands on the iPhone 5, this is the perfect time.
