Death Star Strikes Back! Project Revived on Kickstarter
Remember how disappointed we all were to learn that the proposed Death Star project had been denied funding by the White House? Well, the idea has just been given a new breath of life, as someone has just launched a Kickstarter aimed at securing funding to build the deadliest weapon ever conceived…
“We need to protect ourselves from threats far far away so lets build a death star,” claims the project’s creator, Gnut.
The idea first came about back in November of 2012, when the American people petitioned the Obama administration to provide funding to build a Death Star, claiming that “By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”
Somewhat surprisingly, the idea received tremendous public support, surpassing the 25,000 required signatures needed to elicit a response from the government. Alas, that it was not to be, as White House officials declined to build the weapon, citing the huge expense that the project would entail, whilst claiming that it “doesn’t support blowing up planets”.
Undeterred by this huge disappointment, Gnut, who is based in the UK, has attempted to revive the Death Star plan, launching a Kickstarter that aims to secure £20,000,000 so that he can provide “more detailed plans” on how it would actually be constructed. To actually build the Death Star, Gnut estimates needing £543,000,000,000,000,00 in total, which is roughly equivalent to the White House’s own estimation of the cost of building a fully functional Death Star, a cool $850,000,000,000,000,000.
Since its launch two days ago, the idea has picked up quite a bit of steam, with 1,003 backers pledging £190,747 in funding so far, with 52 days left to go.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on its progress ;)
