Amplidata to Showcase Cloud Storage Tech at NAB 2013

Amplidata, a Belgian startup that develops scale-out storage solutions and data protection software, reserved a booth at the upcoming NAB 2012 gathering in Las Vegas. The event is one of the largest digital media conventions in the world.

Studios such as Pixar are among the largest consumers of cloud-based storage and compute because of the type of data they work with: 3D high frame rate and 4K “ultra HD” video.

Amplidata is attending the event to showcase an upcoming media gateway that will allow studios to quickly ingest such workloads and beam them off to geo-dispersed post-production teams with minimum delay. The company will also unveil the latest version of its flagship storage platform, which features  faster small file throughput and an overall speed boost thanks to improved support for Intel’s new X5 chips.  Other enhancements include an improved API encryption algorithm and support for Amazon S3.

Mike Wall, Amplidata’s chief executive officer, will participate in a panel discussion entitled “Cloud-Based Multimedia Storage” to pitch the advantages of his company’s solutions to the media executives attending the conference. Wall will discuss how software advancements are making commodity systems viable for productions that use 48 fps, 60 fps or 120 fps production formats.

“It’s entirely possible to deliver these long sought-after exciting new entertainment formats and not go broke on the storage they require as capacity demands reach into the 10s of Petabytes per film,” Wall wrote in a statement.

“We look forward to showcasing the work that entertainment industry leaders are doing today with cloud storage, and the path being charted toward significantly higher efficiency and overall cost effectiveness.”

Cost-efficiency and elasticity are top priorities for organizations in all verticals. NetApp recently launched a private cloud solution for enterprise AWS users in response to growing interest in cloud storage services.
