Amazon’s Siri-Killing Ambitions & Twitter’s New Music Service

In today’s SiliconANGLE news roundup: Amazon preps smartphone with Evi buy; Google Glass ownership confusion; Google Fiber coming to Utah; Intel acquires Mashery to remain relevant; Samsung partners with rival HyNix to meet Galaxy SIV supply; Kirabook lighter than MacBook Air, LinkedIn overhauls mobile apps; Yahoo! launches new iOS apps; Piggybackr allows crowdfunding for kids’ projects; and Twitter #music goes live.

Amazon preps smartphone with Evi buy

Amazon’s is preparing to launch a smartphone of its own with the buyout of the Evi app, a natural language search engine. Earlier this year, Amazon purchased Ivona, a voice recognition software company. An Amazon smartphone with an Ivona powered Evi app could theoretically compete with both Apple’s Siri, and the voice enabled Google Now app.

Google Glass ownership confusion

The official Google Plus Glass community say that you don’t actually own the Android based wearable computer – even after paying for it! Recently, an eBay auction for Google Glass reached $90,000 but was soon taken down by the poster in order to avoid any legal implications from Google.

Google Fiber coming to Utah

Provo, Utah officially announced that they will be the third city in the nation to receive Google Fiber. In exchange for Fiber, the city will sell their existing fiber-optic network to Google, who will upgrade it, and finish construction to the entire city. The deal will provide citizens with free internet services, as well as broadband and TV options.

Intel acquires Mashery to remain relevant

Intel is acquiring Mashery, an API management company. Some observers view these purchases as an effort to remain relevant. Providing CPU’s for struggling computer makers isn’t as exciting as providing the tools that enable hot startup apps to communicate and interact with each other. As the PC market continues to dwindle, we’re likely to see more product and services diversification from companies like Intel.

Samsung partners with rival HyNix to meet Galaxy SIV supply

A supply deal with rival chip maker HyNix could not only benefit Samsung, but make them one of their competitor’s best customers. With high demand for the S4, Samsung fear’s their chip production might not meet demand. In order to ensure there’s no supply disruptions, Korean-based HyNix will need to supply more than enough chips to cover the S4’s expected sales of ten million units a month.

Kirabook lighter than MacBook Air

The recently announced Kirabook weighs considerably less than Apple’s MacBook Air, while offering a higher screen resolution and larger, 256GB SSD. The sixteen-hundred dollar base model can be upgraded to a touch screen for an additional two-hundred dollars. The Kirabook will be available on Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, the Microsoft store, and at other retailers beginning May 12th.

LinkedIn overhauls mobile apps

Linkedin is continuing to improve their mobile presence with a complete overhaul of their app. Coming on both iPhone and Android, the first big upgrade in nearly two years will be their first attempt at monetization, with the introduction of ads in the form of sponsored content in the Linkedin stream. These latest updates are coming as a response to users demands, and with the two hundred million members on the rise, these changes are sure to please.

Yahoo! launches new iOS apps

Yahoo is launching a YahooMail iPad app, and a new iOS weather app. Yahoo Mail is the most used web based email service in the U.S. The new mail app is designed for the iPad’s large, retina display. Yahoo already provides the weather data for Apple’s standard weather app, but its new weather app combines stunning photos that match the user’s location, with the most accurate forecasts and current weather conditions.

Piggybackr allows crowdfunding for kids’ projects

Piggybackr is giving kids a shot at kickstarting their own business. Other crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, IndieGoGO, and Fundly all disallow minors from starting campaigns, or even setting up accounts. With investors selling Piggybackr as a tool for education, expect to see the crowdsourcing tool have a great deal of success in the years to come.

Twitter #music goes live

We reported earlier that Twitter would be launching it’s music service this week and we’re excited to say the app and desktop companion are finally available to the public. SImply search your App store to find and use the new service.
