Amazon launches AWS certification program

Amazon Web Services developers are now certifiable. Amazon has launched an AWS certification program for individuals with the technical skills for building applications using AWS technology. The first certification offered by the new Amazon Web Services Global Certification Program is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect. Amazon will eventually offer additional certifications for the SysOps Administrator, and Developer roles.

Jive reveals StreamOnce and Clara acquisition

Jive revealed yesterday that they have made two acquisitions in the past year. One of their acquisitions, StreamOnce, enables Jive to pull information from multiple platforms, allowing users to put nearly all of their email accounts into one inbox. Another addition to the messaging software is Jive’s other acquisition, Clara; a technology that provides community managers with extremely accurate details about the individuals who visit a particular webpage.

Cisco announces support for customers signed-up with gigabit internet speeds

As Google and AT&T roll out competing gigabit internet offerings, Cisco announces that its prepared to support customers who sign up for the new high speed fiber products. Cisco has predicted that connected devices will consume thirteen times as much data by 2017 as they do now. Laptops and smartphones will eventually be built to support gigabit wi-fi, and consumers will expect network speeds to keep up. Cisco’s first module that supports gigabit speeds is available now, and shipping to select customers.

Novell introduces cloudless mobile file sharing system

Filer is Novell’s cloudless mobile file sharing system, unlike Dropbox, doesn’t copy files to off-site commercial cloud storage services. Varness spoke about Filer’s enterprise approach, saying, “The content stays in an organization’s existing file system. Our server makes the connection from the mobile device. The user logs in, authenticates back to their existing directory, using the same credentials they use to log in from the office.” The Filer app is now available for iOS, Android, and Blackberry devices, as well as Windows PC and Mac.

DreamWorks close to acquiring AwesomenessTV

DreamWorks is close to a deal to acquire YouTube network AwesomenessTV. Described as a next-generation Nickelodeon, AwesomenessTV was founded by Brian Robbins, the former child-star known for his role in the 1980’s series Head of the Class. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has expressed interest in launching a DreamWorks television channel. Analysts suspect that the acquisition of AwesomenessTV is a strategic move by DreamWorks, to lay the foundation for its broadcast tv ambitions.

Paul Otellini urges FCC to approve SoftBank’s plan

Even though Paul Otellini and Intel have nothing to do with the telecom industry, it didn’t stop him from writing to the FCC Chairman to encourage the twenty-billion-dollar bid by Japanese telecom giant SoftBank. Otellini feels that SoftBank has the ability to build a high-speed network that could actually bring competition to the telecom market, something he feels that both AT&T and Verizon are not currently giving to customers.

Netflix loses more than 2K videos as studios refuse to renew licensing

Close to 2,000 videos were removed from Netflix service. The content is owned by Warner Brothers, MGM, and Universal, and they refused to renew their licensing agreements with Netflix. Soon, their combined media assets will be available exclusively via the new Warner Archive Instant streaming video service. The missing titles demonstrate why Netflix is making an effort to be less reliant on content owners.

Obama’s nomination of Tom Wheeler receives tons of negative feedback

The White House is drawing a lot of criticism today over President Obama’s nomination of Tom Wheeler for chairman Federal Communications Commission. Though it’s not unusual for an FCC appointee to be an industry insider, considering Mr. Wheeler’s previous occupation as a telecom lobbyist, many suspect this nomination is nothing more than the revolving door of greasy politics. Despite the criticisms, many are pointing to Mr. Wheeler’s history as a lobbyist as the reason for why he’s the right man for the job.

iMakr opens largest 3D printing store in the UK

As 3D printers continue to become more affordable, store fronts are now popping up to cash in on the craze. iMakr has opened what they claim is the world’s largest 3D printing store. The store, located in London’s Farringdon area, occupies twenty-five hundred square feet across two floors. The showroom offers printers to buy on the spot as well as consumer workshops. The 3D printer selection will include the Solidoodle 3; and likely selections from iMakr’s online channel including MakerBot’s and the Replicator 2. We may be a ways off from having a 3D printing store on every corner, but the London store certainly gives the retail concept some legitimacy.
