With Nearly $1Million in Seed Funding, Everwise Uses Big Data to Reinvent Mentoring

With the popularity dating sites like eHarmony, Match.com, OkCupid and the like are no longer simply waiting for the stars to align to meet that special someone.  The new online platform, Everwise, has capitalized on the networking trend as the “eHarmony for finding the right career mentor.” Everwise allows users to select from a variety of traits and industry profiles to help you find the Sergey Brin to your Marissa Mayer.

According to Colleen Taylor of TechCrunch, Everwise raised just under $1 million in seed funding for the new platform that utilizes predictive analytics to make the best match between mentee and mentor. Everwise co-founder Mike Bergelson suggests big data predictive analytics sometimes know what we want better than we do, which makes the company’s approach so useful. Bergelson explains: “sometimes people aren’t always the best at choosing the right mentor on their own…people with the most compelling titles and sexiest businesses get all the attention.” Everwise looks past the surface appeal of a mentor to the credentials and experience that they could substantively offer a mentee. The platform analyzes data from a protégé’s LinkedIn profile and personalized questionnaire into an algorithm based on Everwise’s studies of approximately 60,000 mentoring partnerships.

Jon Xavier of Silicon Valley Business Journal considers the Everwise design timely, describing it as “a very interesting approach, [right] in the sweet spot of a major trend that’s happening in business right now — the entry of big data analytics into HR.” Given that employees seem to be moving from employer to employer more frequently, HR departments can utilize big data to understand their employee interests and goals, to help boost retention. Companies like Hewlett Packard, Direct Energy, and Sigma Aldrich have paid the fee for their employees to find mentors through the website. Charging protégés $150/month to use the site (mentors volunteer), Bergelson says the pricing model is competitive.

Everwise was co-founded by Maynard Webb, former COO of eBay and board member at LiveOps, Salesforce.com and current interim chairman of Yahoo!. Mike Bergelson, Everwise co-founder and CEO, developed enterprise software company Audium.
