“Glassware” Apps Now Available for Google Glass
Glassholes rejoice! New apps are coming to Google Glass which means you’ll have more things to do with the high-tech specs than just tinker around with Google services.
Path and New York Times were among the first apps announced for Google Glass use, but until now we haven’t heard much else. Now though, at the Google I/O 2013 conference, we’ve seen a number of new apps announced for the highly talked about piece of wearable tech device.
Glasswares, as Google has dubbed the new set of apps made just for Google Glass, includes CNN News, so glassholes can get their fill of breaking news whilst simultaneously eyeing up things they shouldn’t. Just for the girls meanwhile is the Elle app for fashion tips and what-nots. As well, there’ll be Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook variants for all you glassholes social needs, and finally there’s Evernote, so you won’t miss a thing as your notifications flash up before your very eyes.
As of now, the Facebook app only allows glassholes to share photos taken with Google Glass, while the Twitter app allows users to do the same task as well as get notifications for mentions, DMs and tweets.
“In addition to sharing photos, you can also keep up with the people you follow on Twitter through notifications — for mentions, DMs and Tweets from users for whom you’ve turned on notifications. As always, you can reply to, retweet or favorite these Tweets,” Twitter engineering manager Shiv Ramamurthi said in a Twitter blog post today.
Downloading these apps might be a bit tricky. You can’t download them directly to your Google Glass, so you’ll need to download them via the My Glass app before installing them on the device. And if you’re downloading any of the social apps, you’ll also need to activate the sharing options on the glass itself.
More Glassware on the Way?
So now that the first wave of Glassware is out, the question is, will there be any more? And if so, what kind of new apps do people want to see?
TheNextWeb paraphrased a transcript of Google’s discussion with its Glass staff, revealing some of the apps that these people would most like to see on Google Glass:
Lyric app
“I’m really into karaoke. If there was a way to sing and have the lyrics located in Glass, so that you could face your drunk friends as you scream, that would be awesome,” Isabelle Olsson, lead industrial designer for Google Glass, said.
Payment app
“I would love to be able to pay with Glass. To just say, ok, pay, and then move on,” Charles Mendis, Google Glass engineer stated.
Fitness app
“I am an exercise fanatic, and would love to have a fitness app on Glass, and to have it integrate with my heart rate monitor. With that app, I could have information relevant to my workout fed to me, without breaking my stride. This would also make cycling a much safer activity,” Steve Lee, product director for Google Glass, added
Of course, just because Google’s team wants to see these kinds of apps, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s possible to create them. Nevertheless, Google has built its fortune on the back of providing us with the things that we need, often before we’ve even thought about them ourselves. For that reason, it’s reasonable to assume that if an idea’s viable and likely to provide ‘glassholes’ with real benefits, Google will do everything it can to make it happen.
