People Don’t Think of Dell in Networking, but They Should, says Analyst

Dell announced a number of products at the Day of Dell Enterprise Forum event in San Jose, CA this week.

Some of products include Version 6.4 of Compellent Storage Center, which introduces an ‘intelligent data placement’ engine that distinguishes high-performance flash from lower quality variants and SC280, an ultra-dense rack enclosure that can store up to 336 terabytes in a 5U form factor.

Aside from the two major additions to Compellent, Dell announced version 3.0 of its FluidFS file system that supports up to two petabytes of data in a single namespace, and includes policy-based deduplication functionality that enables admins to configure tasks in advance.

Dell’s storage strategy is setting out to take the industry to the next level by leveraging new flash solutions.

Joining Kristin Feledy in this morning’s NewsDesk is Wikibon Senior Analyst Stu Miniman to give his Breaking Analysis in Dell’s networking position in the marketplace.

“Dell made a huge splash when they had bought Force10.  People don’t necessarily think of Dell and the networking space too much, but they should,” Miniman says.  “The Dell Force10 solutions are number two behind Cisco.  If we look at the overall market share even this has given Dell a boost as they’ve taken that portfolio into their environment where they have plenty of server environment, lots of storage and growing presence in the data center, Cisco is still by far the number one.

“HP had separated itself as the number two and Dell has started to separate itself from the rest of the pack so they are number three in overall revenue from the most recent market data.  If they can maintain that it’s interesting to see some separation after years and years of everyone muddling along at that kind of three percent market share.  Dell has a clear position as to where they think they’re going,” Miniman stated.
