For many people Instagram is not just an app, its an addiction. The new free Instafeed iOS app gives instagramaholics a way to organize, sort and track the many images their glued to for most of the day. Instafeed allows users to customize and browse instagram feeds and explore pre-curated feeds in various categories. According to Tech Crunch’s John Constine, this new option “demonstrates how Instagram is more than an app. It’s a platform that lets developers fill in gaps in its user experience.”
Twitter and Facebook users will find Instafeed’s capability similar to Twitter Lists or Facebook Friends Lists. Instafeed users can also re-post Instafeed photos to their own followers. (Subscriging to Instafeed users does not reflect in your Instagram following total). The Next Web identified some limitations of the app in its current state. Namely, you cannot view an account before subscribing to it, but must wait until their photos appear before deciding to delete the stream. Also, the curated content has a predominately United States focus. Sports content, for example, focuses mostly on American leagues and does not include international football.
Constine suggests the app is useful, but “as a startup, Appiphany is on thin ice.” After all, Instagram could simply create its own curation feature and topple Instafeed. And, if the app became very successful, Instagram could restrict API access. According to Constine’s personal conversation with Instafeed co-founder, Ranier Gadduang, Instafeed is mainly focused on growth and has not yet considered monetization.
So, who’s behind Instafeed? Appiphany, a year-old start-up was created to identify and address opportunities in mobile. Co-founders include Gadduang, Daniel Corsaro and Fahad Al Saud a Saudi Arabian prince, former Facebook employee and friend of Instagram co-founder, Kevin Systrom.
What lies ahead for the Appiphany startup still remains to be seen. However, for now, Instafeed’s curation and organization features make it a useful app that Instagram users can appreciate – especially the addicts. One added bonus, Amy Feinberg of Gizmodo notes is: “You can finally leave your Instagram feed clean and full of people you actually know.”
