Dell Unleashes New Version of Desktop Virtualization Platform
Dell says that the latest version of its Wyse WSM desktop and application virtualization platform can help organizations of all sizes boost efficiency and drive down costs. The soon-to-be-available solution features server provisioning capabilities, support for 64-bit software, and several other notable improvements.
Dell teamed up with virtualization firm CloudVolumes to make WSM’s management and streaming functionality available for server environments. The vendor also added support for Hyper-V- and ESX 5.1-based virtual machines, compatibility with 64-bit applications and operating systems, and enhanced Active Directory integration.
Another major enhancement is the ability to manage and configure BIOS settings on Dell Cloud Desktops directly from within WSM 6.0.0. This feature is complemented by a shared storage function that automatically optimizes capacity based on server requirements.
“The new Dell Wyse WSM server streaming feature demonstrates our commitment to making powerful virtualization and cloud computing tools practical and accessible to organizations of all sizes,” said Jeff McNaught, Executive Director of Marketing for Dell’s Cloud Client Computing business. “This release is right in line with our goal to be the one-stop-shop for any customers looking to reduce costs and enhance business by optimizing their IT systems.”
Wyse WSM 6.0.0 is set to hit general availability next Monday. The platform will support a wide-range of endpoints, including Wyse’s D00D, Z00D, and X00m client devices, as well as select Dell OptiPlex and Precision T1700 machines.
Dell is one of several vendors doubling down on the increasingly lucrative desktop virtualization market. Last month, Nutanix introduced a high-end enterprise platform for VD dubbed NX-600. The $60,000 box sports 35 TB to 70 TB of usable storage capacity and double the amount of server-side side flash as Nutanix’s low-end NX-100 system. The startup says that the combination of raw capacity and speed makes the NX-600 ideal for CPU-intensive tasks such as desktop virtualization and Big Data analytics.
