Enabling Market Share Growth: HP + Vertica = Satisfied Partners | #HPBigData2013

Having traveled to Boston for the HP Big Data Conference, John Furrier and Dave Vellante, theCube co-hosts, tracked down the big names in the industry to discuss the hot topics of the hour, and current industry trends. The focus of the event was on Vertica’s customers and the business intelligence.

Andrew MacBean, VP of Vertica Ecosystem & Solutions, started the interview by talking about the event from an organizer’s point of view, walking us from the idea to the actual Conference.

MacBean thinks the high demand for this event was partly due to the buzz that still surrounds Vertica. HP Vertica is doing extremely well at the moment, and the technology is very hot.

It’s who you know


“A lot of our partners are looking to go with us as we get better and many of them are looking at us to open the market for their business too. They see us as a vehicle that enables their market share growth,” explained MacBean.

The right associations can prove beneficial for business, as MacBean knows from his own experience. Clearly, HP’s name has also opened the market for a whole new lot of partners for Vertica. Originally, back when Vertica was just a start-up, not many companies would have considered working with them, but after the HP acquisition they attracted a fresh set of partners.

How partners fit into the HP ecosystem


The whole HP ecosystem is entwined data, data deployment, data delivery, getting insight into the big data space. The entire ecosystem is interested in getting data into and out of Vertica, deriving value out of that. In that respect, there are partners who are developing on top of Vertica, designing tools that enable users to better manage Vertica.

“There are many ways in which our partners can get involved with us,” said MacBean. “There’s not a single part of our ecosystem where we have a lack of partnership right now.”

Asked about the challenges he faced in the market place, Andrew MacBean agreed that, despite the growth of the recent years, they are still a small unit within HP.  However, the ecosystem looks like one belonging to a much bigger company. As Vertica rolls out new features, the team has to go out there and evangelize those features to the partners, hoping that they will adopt the new technology into their product line.

As for the company’s stance on OpenStack, MacBean clarified that HP is endorsing OpenStack as a Cloudera platform. “It’s a natural fit and there are a couple of initiatives going on within HP related to OpenStack.”

With an interesting career path, from support and pre-sales to consulting and development, this is the second time Andrew MacBean has been acquired by HP while working for a start-up.

The vision for the future and the ecosystem is growth: “We want to continue to grow our partner base, and our business alongside our partners’ businesses, so we’re looking for partners who want to adopt our technology and run with us. We value the diversity of our partners and we endorse them all ,” said MacBean. In the future, he expects to see an increasing number of companies embracing the HP technology and the Big Data portfolio.
