Weekly Cloud Review: Virtualization at the Center Stage

Cloud vendors spent the last week gearing up for VMworld. Managed service provider NaviSite revealed an infrastructure-as-a-service offering for vCloud Director users, Dell added three new solutions to its virtualization lineup, and Piston Systems announced that it has taken its partnership with Pivotal to the next level. In other news, Appcelerator acquired API startup Singly.

On Wednesday NaviSite introduced NaviSite Cloud, an IaaS platform that was developed in collaboration with VMware to extend vCloud Director. The offering provides developers with API access to AppCenter and vCloud Director, along with the ability to customize network architectures and integrate their environments with other NaviSite services.

Shortly after NaviSite pulled the curtains back on its newest offering, OpenStack specialist Piston Cloud announced that it has donated infrastructure to the Cloud Foundry technical community. The news came as a surprise for many in light of the fact that Foundry is operated by Pivotal, the recently founded EMC and VMware spinoff. The virtualization giant regards OpenStack as a threat to its core virtualization business, a stance that was recently reiterated by CEO Pat Gelsinger.

While VMware is busy competing with OpenStack and Amazon, Dell is bolstering its software portfolio with refreshed virtualization solutions. The company recently introduced the latest version of Foglight for Storage Management, an administration platform that provides users with visibility into their storage infrastructure. The platform’s monitoring capabilities are complemented with built-in analytics and data visualization.

Foglight for Storage Management made its debut alongside Foglight Enterprise Edition, which features comprehensive support, and Standard Edition. The latter is an SMB version of the platform that utilizes automation to simplify resource optimization and capacity planning.

Dell announced the new Foglight released on the heels of Appcelerator’s acquistion of Singly, a San Francisco-based API automation startup. The company’s flagship offering normalizes third party services across mobile platforms.
