Dell Goes All-in on Software-Defined Networking at #VMworld
Like many of its fellow IT titans, Dell announced a slew of new offerings at this week’s VMworld conference. The vendor unleashed an SDN-enabled switching platform and a set of improved network management tools, in addition to over a dozen integrations and product refreshes.
Dell has expanded its S-series product family with the S6000, a top-of-rack switch that introduces support for VMware’s NSX network virtualization layer. The 1U system delivers twice the density and throughput of previous generations while consuming up to 50 percent less power, the company said.
The S6000 is joined by Active Fabric Manager (AFM) 2.0, the latest version of Dell’s converged network management offering. The release features command line interface functionality for VMware vSphere Distributed Switch, which means that admins can now configure both physical and virtual fabric switches using standard syntax.
Other additions to Dell’s virtualization lineup include Compellent vSphere Client Plug-in 2.0, EqualLogic Virtual Storage Manager for VMware 4.0, and a new OpenManage release that supports vSphere 5.5. Also notable is Fault Resilient Memory, a technology that increases hypervisor protection against memory faults in PowerEdge 12th Generation Servers.
“Dell’s new offerings should help customers boost IT performance and better enable business agility. When you include VMware’s virtualization technology with Dell’s solutions, customers will want to take a close look at how they can further enhance and quickly optimize their businesses with these joint solutions,” said Wayne Pauley, a senior analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG).
Earlier this week Dell introduced three new editions of its Foglight virtualization management platform. Foglight for Storage Management 3.0 offers built-in system health analytics, while Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition 7.0 features support for vCloud Director, View and vSphere. The third release, Foglight for Virtualization Standard Edition, helps SMBs reduce the complexity associated with manual resource optimization and capacity planning.
