SUSE Extends Linux Enterprise Server to VMware vCloud Hybrid Cloud Service #VMworld

VMware announced the U.S. availability of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) VMware vCloud Hybrid Service at the ongoing VMWorld 2013. Suse Linux vendor is expanding its collaboration with VMware and offers Suse Linux Enterprise Server for VMware on the VMware vCloud hybrid service.

Since 2010, the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is available with VMware vSphere. The maintenance costs for the enterprise server are covered in the vSphere maintenance contract.

In order to provide customers with a flexible cloud strategy, Suse expanded cooperation with VMware virtualization specialist. As per the agreement, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server will be available in the VMware vCloud Hybrid Service catalog and sold as monthly instances initially, metered by VMware. The subscription will provide patches and updates for the OS.

With the extension of the cooperation between SUSE and VMware, customers now have a choice to implement strategies in the cloud or start a new Linux servers based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) using the VMware vCloud Service Hybrid. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is ideal system to run the Linux operating system in virtually any virtual environment, especially on VMware.

“We have a lot of customers already running Suse Linux in their private data centers who are looking to move to public clouds. They will now be able to use the same tools that they use to manage their private VMware to manage their instances in the public VMware cloud,” said Frank Rego, Suse’s VMware alliance manager.

VMware was first announced the IaaS vCloud hybrid service back in May providing two key solutions – the vCloud Hybrid Service Dedicated Cloud, which is physically isolated, and the Virtual Cloud, which is logically isolated.

The advantage of using Suse is the ease of movement and control of Suse instances between IT environments and services. Because both the cloud and on-premise instances will run on VMware’s ESX hypervisor, they both can be managed from the VMware vCenter and vCloud management consoles. Moreover, the same tool can be used to manage your private VMware cloud and your public VMware cloud.

Suse plans to launch such an offer, in which subscribers can use the licenses purchased by Suse, for Suse Linux instances on VMware -based cloud. Currently, VMware vCloud Hybrid Service is based in a data center in Las Vegas and the beginning of September the service will be extended in two locations – Santa Clara, California and Sterling, Virginia.

Suse Linux Enterprise Server will be available in the vCloud Hybrid Service Marketplace–a portal that provides software for VMware cloud environments. USE Linux Enterprise Server for VMware vCloud Service Hybrid will be available to customers in the fourth quarter of this year.
