Electronic Arts Celebrates 25 Million Downloads of Plants vs Zombies 2 in Two Weeks
The mobile market is growing rapidly. In recent days, the average player is delighted with faster titles and ease of online play, such as those available on iOS or Android platforms. One such recently released game is Plants vs. Zombies 2, a new chapter in the tower defense series that has really captured the attention (and brains) of millions of players on mobile devices.
Plants vs Zombies 2 carries a legacy of great value with a first series of mind boggling download numbers netted by fame and classic popularity–and it’s been a very long time in coming. PopCap Games, a unit of Electronic Arts (EA) is therefore thrilled to announce that the second episode of the series has been a tremendous success reaching the 25 million downloads, surpassing in fact the download of the predecessor.
This figure represents a major increase over August 22’s past data, when the game had been downloaded by 16 million users. This fact has dubbed it the “most successful game launch” in EA history. Taking advantage of this triumph of the Apple App Store, PopCap announced in what may be an expansion of the game: Plants vs Zombies 2: Crop Circles.
In this second episode the protagonist, Crazy Dave, travels back in time to contain zombies with an arsenal of plants and strategies in time-travel scenarios such as Ancient Egypt, Seas Pirates, and Old West. Plants vs Zombies 2 was released to strengthen the already good quality offered by the first, adding several new features and giving a greater depth to the levels.
One of the biggest innovations in Plants vs. Zombies is power-ups. The three power-ups–Power Pinch, Power Toss, and Power Zap–can help players with surprising defense on new types of zombies and new kinds of plants. However, it will arm yourself with patience to get through the levels by collecting as many stars and key in order to pass all the steps quickly.
Game lovers aren’t just downloading the game; they’re also spending a considerable amount of time with the mobile title. As per the infographics released by EZ, there are already 39 billion suns generated, ten billion plant planted and 81 million hours of gameplay registered for this game.
EA had been banking on the new free-to-play game, hoping to rake in profits through in-game transactions instead of paid downloads. According to market research firm Super Data, mobile games revenue soared 32.0% year over year to $271.0 million. EA is trying to well-positioned itself to grab this huge growth opportunity based on its innovative product pipeline and increasing user base. The company is hopeful about its yet-to-be released shooter game “Battlefield 4,” and its soccer title “FIFA 14”, both of which are also expected to be very popular.
