Amazon Bundles Paper with Digital E-Books with New Kindle Matchbook
No more choosing between buying a paper or a digital book. Amazon is finally moving forward in selling the book–alongside it’s digital counterpart. If you buy a physical book on Amazon, would not it be great if you give away a digital copy of the same on Kindle?
Amazon has thought about it and came to a solution: Kindle Matchbook. Matchbook combines the two media formats. The company recently announced the new program that will offer discounted Kindle books with those who already have a physical copy of the books involved.
The program will start in October and includes about 10,000 books from various authors. Those who have purchased a copy from Amazon in the past 18 years (yes, since 1995), they may redeem their respective copy of Kindle for $2.99, $1.99, $0.99 or in some cases, free download.
Matchbook Kindle will be available next month, and Amazon will already make 10,000 books available on MatchBook including best sellers like I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving and The Hangman’s Daughter by Oliver Pötzsch.
“If you logged onto your CompuServe account during the Clinton administration and bought a book like Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus from Amazon, Kindle MatchBook now makes it possible for that purchase—18 years later—to be added to your Kindle library at a very low cost,” said Russ Grandinetti, Vice President of Kindle Content. “In addition to being a great new benefit for customers, this is an easy choice for publishers and authors who will now be able to earn more from each book they publish.”
This solution would be among the most demanded by the Amazon Kindle customers and publishers. For many publishers and authors, the new feature would probably offer a unique chance to make the readers pinpoint an additional offer and in returns earn more from each book they publish.
“I love this idea. It’s simple, brilliant, and good for everybody. I love to have print books on my shelf, but I love reading my Kindle on the go, and there are plenty of titles I’d like both ways. It’s ridiculous to ask readers to pay full retail twice for the same book,” says best-selling author Marcus Sakey.
In the same way it happens that regular purchases on Kindle, MatchBook books possess features like Whispersync, Popular Highlights, and X-Ray mode. Amazon said the new service will be available both for Android devices and iOS, as well as for PC and Mac.
Amazon Publishing will include books from Ray Bradbury, Michael Crichton, Blake Crouch, James Rollins, Jodi Picoult, Neil Gaiman, Marcus Sakey, Wally Lamb, Jo Nesbo, Neal Stephenson, and J.A. Jance, among others. For authors and publishers, Amazon provided Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) program to enroll their books.
Early this year, Amazon announced AutoRip service that would give customers the mp3 version of any physical album bought through the retailer. When a customer purchased a CD that’s AutoRip eligible, Amazon stores the corresponding MP3s onto their Cloud Player library for free.
