Nokia has finally unveiled its long-awaited entry into the phablet market with its new Lumia 1520, a 6-inch Full HD device running Windows Phone 8.1, with a monster 20-megepixel PureView camera that borrows the digital zoom feature of the company’s Lumia 1020. The biggest Windows Phone ever made, the Lumia 1520 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2GHz quadcore chip, boasts LTE and a 3,400 mAh battery that’ll keep it running all day long.
The Lumia 1520 wasn’t the only device unveiled at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi today though – aside from that beast, the company showed off no less than six other gadgets. These include a second phablet, the Lumia 1320, also a six-incher, albeit with a 720 display rather than the 1080p of the latter; and also Nokia’s first ever tablet running Windows RT, the Lumia 2520; plus three new low-cost handsets in its budget Asha line.
Nokias phablets were the headline act this morning in Abu Dhabi. The company hasn’t yet provided full specs for the Lumia 1320 so we’re unable to compare them fully, but what we do know is that both devices are so big they’ll be the first Windows Phones capable of displaying a third column of tiles on the home screen.
According to Nokia, the Lumia 1520 will go on sale in Q4 across select markets in North America, Europe and Asia. The device is expected to sell for around $749, and will be available in yellow, white, black and glossy red colors.
As for the Nokia Lumia 1320, this will be far cheaper at just $339, and availale in orange, yellow, white and black plastic. The device will go on sale in China and Vietnam in Q1 next year, followed by India and Europe later in the year. Sadly for Windows Phone fans, the device is not expected to go on sale in the US.
Here’s the full specs for the Lumia 1520:
Second billing is Nokia’s first tablet device, the 10.1-inch Lumia 2520 that boasts a 1080p Full HD display. Nokia touts the device as offering the “best outdoor and indoor readability of any tablet,” – quite a claim to make and one that many users will be eager to test the moment it comes available.
Similar to Microsoft’s ill-fated Surface RT, the Lumia 2520 is more than just a tablet. It can be hooked up to a $150 Nokia Power Keyboard, and comes with a wraparound cover that functions as a keypad. However it goes on step further, with the attachment also featuring a gesture trackpad, plus additional batteries that give it an extra five hours of juice. Nokia also touted the tablet’s fast-charging ability, claiming that it can charge to 80% full in just one hour
Nokia has also gone against the grain, offering only one version with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity, unlike most other brands that offer lower-end Wi-Fi only models and higher-end Wi-Fi plus LTE devices. And because the Lumia 2520 is running Windows RT, users will also get their hands on a free version of Microsoft Office and Outlook, both of which come pre-installed.
Other features include a 6.7 megapixel camera with ZEISS optics, plus a 2MP HD wide-angle camera on the back, and also HERE Maps, something that Nokia argues makes it the only tablet in the world to offer “true offline maps”.
Here’s the specs in full:
Finally to wrap things up, Nokia also unveiled three new members of its low-cost Asha family, the Asha 500, Asha 502 and Asha 503. All three devices are set to go on sale in Q4, available in bright red, green, yellow, cyan, black and white colors.
The Nokia Asha 500 features a 2.8-inch screen, 2MP camera, and comes in single SIM and Easy Swap Dual SIM variants. It will ship for $69 in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
The Nokia Asha 502 features a 3-inch screen, a 5MP camera with LED flash, and Easy Swap Dual-SIM. It will ship for $89 in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East.
The Asha 503 features 3.5G connectivity, a 3-inch screen, 5MP camera with LED flash, Corning Gorilla Glass 2, and comes in single SIM and Easy Swap Dual SIM variants. It will ship for $99 in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Probably the biggest new feature (for anyone who knows anything about Asha) is the new user interface that will “enable faster and easier sharing of images on social networks,” according to Nokia. This involves one-swipe access to the camera, and a one-touch sharing button. In addition, there’s a second home screen that allows faster access to all of your favorite apps, plus deeper integration with social media networks. Finally, all three devices will come with Nimuzz Messenger installed, making them the first Asha devices to support VoIP.
