HP Big Data execs go in-depth on analytics | #HPDiscover
HP Autonomy global lead Brian Weiss and Shilpa Lawande, HP Vertica’s vice president of engineering, appeared on theCUBE at Discover 2013 for an in-depth discussion of the technology titan’s Big Data value proposition.
Vertica 7, the latest version of the analytic database, launched a few weeks prior to the event’s kick off in Barcelona. Lowndes boasts that the release has received an “amazing” reception among customers, thanks largely to the new FlexZone capability for ingesting unstructured and semi-structured information.
Over at Autonomy, the IDOL Big Data search tool has been made more accessible for organizations through a hosted edition and a set of APIs designed to boost developer productivity. The offering enables users to process “human data,” Weiss details, and drive insight into complex metrics like consumer sentiment.
“The point is to be able to get insight out of information, and to be able to do that, you have to be able to understand it in human terms and be able to handle the massive volume,” Weiss explains, exemplifying that ”it’s great to know you’ve got 10 million calls between 10 and 11 o’clock, and you’ve got a lot of data points about every phone call, but were they mad? What do they talk about? You can’t get that data point without understanding and analyzing the actual call itself.”
Autonomy’s technology is a core pillar of the HAVEn platform, an integrated offering that unifies core HP’s Big Data assets, including Vertica. Lawande details that the components of the solution can be purchased independently, which gives customers the freedom to tailor their deployments to specific use cases. These range from network monitoring all the way to machine data analytics, a growing trend driven by the fast expanding Internet of Things.
“What we find is a lot of this data – sensor data, machine data, things like that – even though people think of it as unstructured, there’s a lot of structure in that data, it’s semi-structured. And we find that making it possible for people to easily ingest and analyze that data is a huge leap,” Lawande tells theCUBE host Dave Vellante.
