Broadcom unveils Wireless Audio SDK + more #CES2014 smart home solutions

This week’s SmartHome roundup features new SDK for Broadcom’s WICED, and new home automation products unveiled at CES 2014.

Broadcom’s WICED SDK

Broadcom has introduced a new software development kit for its Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) portfolio that would allow high-definition audio streaming over a Wi-Fi network.

The WICED Audio SDK provides OEMs with an innovative solution to deliver content directly from devices to speakers without the use of docking stations or wires.  It comes pre-integrated with Apple AirPlay support, and home media devices can seamlessly connect to products like smart TVs, portable speakers, media players, set-top boxes, sound bars and more using the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) standard or an advanced streaming application for Android.

“We are building on the strength of our WICED platform to reach new customers in new markets, and with more wireless speakers hitting retail shelves, the audio industry represents a significant opportunity for Broadcom,” said Brian Bedrosian, Broadcom Senior Director, Embedded Wireless, Wireless Connectivity. “With a proven expertise in embedded high-performance Wi-Fi and a strong base of entertainment access and smartphone customers, the simplified integration of Broadcom’s WICED Audio SDK will help drive adoption of Wi-Fi audio in the home.”

Belkin

Belkin is showcasing a number of new products in its WeMo line, including the LED Lighting Starter Set priced at $129 and the Croc-Pot WeMo Smart Slow Cooker which stems from its partnership with Jarden Consumer Solutions. But the most interesting addition to the product line is the WeMo Maker Kit, which is directed at consumers who aren’t afraid to do things on their own.

What makes the WeMo Maker Kit stand out from other products in the line is that it can be used to remotely control any device that can be powered with a DC switch.  Just wire it in on any low voltage device and start accessing your devices remotely using the Android or iOS WeMo app or create IFTTT recipes to make your life easier and more organized.

The Android tablet maker is entering the home automation market, debuting its offerings at this year’s CES.

At the core of the Archos Connected Home is  a 7-inch, custom designed “Smart Home Tablet” which acts as the control center for all the Archos Connected Objects that includes a mini cam, motion ball, movement tag, smart plug, and a “Weather Station” that monitors indoor and outdoor information like humidity, CO2 levels, temperature and other matters related to the environment.

That’s not all Archos is bringing to CES as it also has some offerings in the Quantified Self and Wearable Tech sectors such as smartwatches and fitness trackers.
